England out, cameras in?
For anyone that has been lurking under a rock these last few days, England are no longer in the World Cup.
Since their exit the team has been the subject of a lot of debate, are they too old?, Were they too tired? But perhaps most importantly, did Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal blow any semblance of confidence that the team had left?
We don’t know. But we do know that the goal that wasn’t has opened up some fresh debate on how and where technology can be used in sport.
Lampard’s strike came during a spell of England dominance and would have levelled the score, brining it back up to 2-2. The goal was disallowed though, to a chorus of disapproval, and has now sparked many calls for the use of goal-line technology.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter said, “It is obvious that after the experiences so far at this World Cup it would be a nonsense not to reopen the file on goal-line technology,” albeit much too late to make a difference to England.
Talks on technology are set to take place at Fifa’s next meeting which takes place in July.
